Connecting College Students to Nonprofit Sector Careers

The nonprofit sector currently employs nearly 14 million Americans - 11 percent of the U.S. workforce.  This vibrant part of the US economy is the sector “of choice” for many young people interested in careers in public service.  With the current economy, jobs in the nonprofit sector are a vital sustaining factor to the social needs of today. But finding a nonprofit sector job is often different than other positions.

 A CALL TO SERVE: NONPROFIT JOBS 2010 is a day-long, interactive workshop on nonprofit careers designed for career service professionals and other individuals who provide career advice. It will feature local and national experts on nonprofit careers from Arizona State University Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation, YMCA of the USA, Valley of the Sun United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix and the National Human Services Assembly.

Session participants will learn about:

  •  navigating job search in the current economic climate
  • the size and scope of the nonprofit sector, the key subsectors within it, and range of job functions in nonprofit organizations
  • key barriers to landing a nonprofit job, and strategies for overcoming those barriers
  • job search strategies specific to the nonprofit sector
  • the best and most current resources for nonprofit sector job preparation and job hunting
  • tips for building connections to local and national nonprofits
  • the nonprofit sector in Phoenix and surrounding states
  • national efforts to recruit talent to the sector
  • campus programs in nonprofit leadership and management

As a part of A CALL TO SERVE, participants will attend two intensive afternoon sessions concentrating on two fields of work –Spotlight On Youth Work Careers led by Irv Kats, President and CEO of National Human Services Assembly; and Spotlight On Philanthropy and Fundraising Careers led by Bob Long, Visiting Distinguished Professor of Nonprofit Leadership at Murray State University and formerly a Senior Program Officer with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

A CALL TO SERVE takes place on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, 9:00am – 5:00pm at the Hyatt Regency Downtown Phoenix, during the American Humanics Management/Leadership Institute. All registrants will receive a free copy of The Nonprofit Career Guide: How to Land a Job that Makes a Difference (Fieldstone, 2008). The cost for the day-long workshop is $125, and includes lunch, snacks, and materials. Arizona Career Development Association (ACDA) and Mountain South Region of the Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges and Employers (MPACE) members receive a $25 dollar discount.

PresenterBios 

Dr. Robert Ashcraft is founding Executive Director of the Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation at Arizona State University (ASU) and associate professor of nonprofit studies in ASU's School of Community Resources and Development. From its beginning in 1999, the ASU Lodestar Center, has emerged as the leading nonprofit academic center in the Southwest and Rocky Mountain region. The ASU Lodestar Center offers a robust portfolio of research, education (undergraduate, graduate and professional development education offerings), technical assistance and conference activities, helping to build the capacity of the social sector by serving those who lead, manage, and support nonprofits. Dr. Ashcraft has also served since 1984 as executive director of American Humanics at ASU. Dr. Ashcraft teaches courses in philanthropy, nonprofit leadership and organization management. His research interests have resulted in publications dealing, in part, with understanding the links between academic preparation and nonprofit career recruitment and retention of professional staff among other themes. Dr. Ashcraft is president of the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC).

Stephen Bauer is the Executive Director of the Nonprofit Workforce Coalition at American Humanics. The goal of this project is to cultivate the talented next generation of nonprofit sector leadership and facilitate the entry of those professionals into the nonprofit sector workforce. This will be accomplished by the formation of a broad-based coalition of national organizations (currently at 60 members) that will (1) work collectively to educate and promote nonprofit sector careers to talented young professionals; and (2) help nonprofit organizations recruit, retain and cultivate the leadership they will need in the decades ahead. Bauer’s role includes coordinating/staffing the Nonprofit Workforce Coalition, overseeing research partnerships and promoting national dialogues on workforce development in the nonprofit sector. Stephen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Graphics from Southeast Missouri State University and a Master of Science degree in College Student Personnel from Western Illinois University.

Christa Burkhalter is the Director of Corporate Affairs & Communications for American Express in Phoenix, Arizona. As Director of Corporate Affairs & Communications, Christa Burkhalter leads strategic communications efforts for the American Express Service CenterPhoenix, including employee communications, media relations and community affairs in the local area. Prior to her current position, Christa served as employee communications manager for the American Express Service CenterPhoenix. Before joining American Express, Christa worked at Health Services Advisory Group and America West Airlines. She earned her communications degree from Ball State University. Christa serves as a member of the American Express Arizona Philanthropy Committee and is an active community volunteer. She proudly serves on the board of directors for Florence Crittenton Services of Arizona. She also serves on the Florence Crittenton executive committee and chairs their development committee. Christa lives in Scottsdale, AZ, with her family.

Amy Gibbons is the President and Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix, one of the largest Boys & Girls Clubs organizations in the country.  She has been involved with the nonprofit community for over 30 years.  Prior to her current appointment, Mrs. Gibbons served as the Executive Director of the YWCA of Maricopa County.  She also worked with the Super Bowl Committee during 1995-96 and chaired the VIP Program for the Committee. She served as Executive Director of the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF) from 1990-94.  As a former tennis professional, Amy has been involved with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for more than 30 years.  She has served the USTA as both a staff member and a volunteer.  She is very proud of her association with the USA National Junior Tennis League as its National Chairperson.  In this capacity, she oversaw the program, which serves more than 150,000 youth in 300 communities across the United States. Amy is a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Ohio.  She continued her education at Cal State Long Beach in the management of nonprofit programs.

Tracy Haney is the Director of the Career Development Office in The W. A. Franke College of Business at Northern Arizona University.  In this role she oversees the college’s career-related activities and programs as well as traveling extensively to meet with employers throughout the country.  She is an active member of several career services associations, including the Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges and Employers (MPACE) and serves on the planning committee for the MPACE Mountain South region.  Tracy is also active in her local community and serves as the Secretary for Peaks Business and Professional Women.  Previously, she taught English and English as a Second Language in New York and St. Petersburg, RussiaTracy holds a BA in English from Walla Walla College and an MA in English Literature from Long Island University, C. W. Post Campus.

Irv Katz is President & CEO of the National Human Services Assembly (National Assembly), the national association of more than seventy of the nation’s leading nonprofit health, human service, human and community development organizations. Ranging, alphabetically, from AARP to the YWCA, the members and their affiliates collectively reach every community and virtually every household in the U.S.—as donors, volunteers and consumers of services. Prior to joining the National Assembly, Katz enjoyed a twenty-three year career with United Way. He served in a variety of positions including six years as its president. During his tenure, he and the superintendent of the city’s largest school district established Bridges to Success, a community-school partnership that began in six schools and is now in over forty and has been replicated or adapted in other communities around the country. Positions held earlier in his career were with the Indianapolis Jewish Community Relations Council and a federation of settlement houses, also in Indianapolis. Kats holds undergraduate and graduate degrees form Indiana University, the former a Bachelor of Arts in English, the latter a masters in social work.  

Karen E. Lamb (Kaye) is the Assistant Director of Advising and Curriculum Development for Arizona State University Career Services on the Tempe campus. She also serves as the current President of the Arizona Career Development Association (ACDA) and is an active member of University Career Women. Previously, Kaye was the Director of Career Services at Elgin Community College (ECC) as well as the two time president of the ECC Chapter, American Association for Women in Community College (AAWCC). She enjoys working with young students to help them discover and build connections between their academic work and their career path. Kaye holds a BA in Speech Communication from Valparaiso University (IN), a MA in Communication Education and Training from the University of Maryland, and a MS in Industrial Relations from Loyola University of Chicago. She is certified as a Global Career Development Facilitator and is an active member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and the National Career Development Association (NCDA).

Dr. Robert F. Long, Jr. is the Visiting Distinguished Professor of Nonprofit Leadership at Murray State University, in western Kentucky. His current commitments include teaching and scholarship in the American Humanics/Youth and Nonprofit Leadership Program, as well as educational and technical assistance support across campus and the regional nonprofit community in the broad field of nonprofit and philanthropic leadership. Prior to joining Murray State University, Bob served in a number of program leadership roles with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation as Program Director, Vice President for Programs, and Senior Program Officer. Before joining the Kellogg Foundation, Bob served as the endowed McElroy Professor of Youth Leadership Studies at the University of Northern Iowa where he also directed the Graduate Program in Youth and Human Service Administration. For the first 15 years of his career Bob was a community-based youth development specialist with the Cooperative Extension Service in Illinois and Nevada. He has been involved in the development of a number of organizations, including the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, Grantmakers for Children, Youth & Families, and Grantmakers for Effective Organizations. Bob holds a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Illinois.

Cindy Parnell oversees all aspects of the Career Services department at Arizona State University’s Downtown Phoenix campus.  Cindy serves as a member of the Regional Director’s Committee for the Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges and Employers (MPACE) Mountain South region.  She is also Chair of the Finance Committee for MPACE’s 2010 Annual Conference in Huntington Beach, CA.  Other memberships include the National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) and the National Career Development Association (NCDA). Prior to working at ASU, Cindy worked for the Scottsdale/Paradise Valley YMCA and other nonprofit organizations in Arizona and California.  Cindy earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Arizona State University (Go Sun Devils!) and a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from Northern Arizona University.  Cindy volunteers for local nonprofit organizations including the Arizona Humane Society, Humane Borders, and the Valley of the Sun YMCA.  Cindy is married and had a baby girl in May 2009.

David P. Thomas is the Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion and is responsible for leading the YMCA of the USA’s strategic plan initiative to deepen and integrate diversity and inclusion principles and practices into core YMCA functions, operations and decision-making processes. One of his key goals is to create an organizational mindset where volunteers and staff understand, respect and value the diversity of others as an intuitive and preferred way of operating. Most recently, he was the Group Senior Vice President and Head of Diversity and Inclusion for LaSalle Bank Corporation and all other ABN AMRO entities within North America. Prior to his contributions at LaSalle, Thomas was vice president and chief diversity officer for Sprint Corporation in Kansas City, Mo.; vice president of human resources for Citigroup in Chicago; regional director of human resources for American Express in New York; and human resources supervisor for FMC Corporation in Chicago. While at Sprint Corporation, Thomas was also executive director for the Sprint Foundation. He currently serves on the American Humanics board and is a member of their Nonprofit Workforce Coalition. Thomas earned his bachelor of arts from City College of New York and his master of business administration from the University of Missouri in Kansas City
